Endoscopic sinus surgery in Lima, Peru

Endoscopic sinus surgery treats diseases of the nose and sinuses through the nostrils, with a thin camera and no visible cuts on the face.

When is it considered?

Surgery is not the first step for most sinus problems. It is considered when appropriate medical treatment has not been enough, or when a condition needs surgery from the start.

  • Chronic sinusitis that keeps causing symptoms despite treatment.
  • Nasal polyps that block the nose or the sense of smell.
  • Fungal ball in a sinus.
  • Sinusitis of dental origin that does not resolve after dental treatment.
  • Complications of sinusitis, and some tumors of the nose and sinuses.

How it is done

It is usually done under general anesthesia, working through the nose with an endoscope and a CT scan as a map. Many patients go home the same day or the next day.

Surgery opens the sinuses so they can drain and receive rinses and medication. In chronic sinusitis and polyps, the inflammation can come back, so many patients keep using medical treatment after surgery.

If you live abroad

You can start with a video call to review your symptoms, previous treatments and CT scan, and plan your trip. The final decision about surgery is made after examining your nose in person.

Plan to stay in Lima for the follow-up visits after surgery, and ask before booking your return flight how long you should wait. It depends on the extent of the surgery.

Risks

Like any surgery, it has risks. The most common are bleeding, crusting and scarring inside the nose. Changes in the sense of smell and, less often, complications involving the eye or the skull base can occur. These are discussed before deciding.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Will it leave a scar?

Usually not, because the surgery is done through the nose.

Can my nasal polyps come back?

Yes. Because the underlying inflammation can persist, polyps may return. Follow-up visits and ongoing treatment help control them.

Do you see patients from other countries?

Yes. The process starts with a review of your records, and the examination and surgery take place in Lima.
